Hosted by QUT, January-February 2016
Professor Tong Zhu from the Peking University (PKU) visited the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) from the 25th January to the 12th February 2016 in Brisbane, Australia. The visit was supported by the Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation at QUT. Professor Zhu is a member of the Board of the ACC–AQSM, and also a Co- Leader of the Centre’s Theme 3: Exposure & Health Effects. This Theme has identified nine different projects and the aim of Professor Zhu’s visit was to further develop the concepts of three of these projects, establish their design structures, and undertake actions to initiate the first stages of the projects, including all the relevant researchers and organisations within the Centre.
During his visit, Professor Zhu gave two seminars at QUT:
1. “The Health Effects of Air Pollution in China: Scientific Challenges and Policy Implications” on the 3 February 2016, at the School of Public Health; and
2. “Air Pollution in China: Scientific Challenges and Policy Implication” on the 4 February 2016, at Institute for Health and Biomedical Innovation.
The visit led to an exciting new collaborative project on children personal exposure between the PKU, QUT and the Sun Yat-Sen University (SYSU) in Guangzhou, China. The design of a new collaborative project on children personal exposure was discussed, as well as its implementation. The project involved research between the QUT, PKU and the Sun Yat-Sen University (SYSU) in Guangzhou, China (in collaboration with Professor Zhu). Professor Lidia Morawska and Dr. Mandana Mazaheri (QUT) provided research support and instrumentation for personal particle exposure monitoring for school children, which was an extension of an already existing research by Associate Professor Weiwei Lin at SYSU, taking advantage of an existing cohort of children. Dr. Mazaheri travelled to China and worked with Associate Professor Lin between the 14th – 22nd April 2016 and provided training for this research and commenced the data collection at the schools in China. Data collection was completed in April 2016 and analysis is still in progress, which will result in at least one journal publication. Further collaborative research has been discussed between QUT, SYSU and Jinan University.
The project, Multi-city comparison of airborne particulate matter matrices and factors driving them, was also discussed and designed to quantitatively compare concentrations of PM2.5 and Particle Number (PN), as well as their uncertainties across cities in Europe, US, China and Australia. This analysis will allow identifying factors driving the concentrations (such as size of the city, topography, meteorology or vehicle fleet), and in turn the impact they have on human exposure, and the ability to predict it.
Publications Outcomes (papers in preparation):
