As the year is drawing to a close, we would like to wish all the members of the Centre a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2018!
I feel that the passing year has been very good and successful for our Centre, and I strongly hope that the coming year, the fourth since the Centre has been established, will be even better with all the joint and exciting projects, collaborations and in particularly the work we are doing on addressing the Big Questions!

An interesting and important conference, the 5th International Symposium on Regional Air Quality Management in Rapidly Developing Economic Regions (5RAQM), was held in Guangzhou between 16 – 19th November, and was organised by the Jinan University. It was co-chaired by Professors Shao Min, Zheng Junyu Allen, and Louie Peter. Around 700 attendees participated in the conference, including many members of the ACC-AQSM. The theme of the 5RAQM was “Air Quality in China: Past, Present and Future”, and therefore the focus of the presentations and discussions was on the past experiences and lessons learnt, difficulties and challenges in air pollution control, as well as on proposed pollution prevention and control strategies for the coming decades. The Symposium provided an excellent interaction platform for scientists, policymakers, industrial entrepreneurs and domestic and overseas environmental protection stakeholders, for sharing the latest scientific information on air pollution and its causes in various rapidly economic development regions, boost an in-depth science-to-policy transformation, and foster science based air quality management across these regions. The Annual Meeting of the ACC-AQSM was held from the 4 – 5th November 2017, and hosted by CRAES in Beijing. Many thanks to those who joined us for the meeting and provided critical input into the discussions! Many, many thanks to Professor Fahe Chai, Dr. Jian Gao and the entire CRAES team for hosting the meeting! The CRAES team has done a marvellous job and organised everything to perfection so our conference was very productive and also enjoyable. On the 26th June 2017, the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) of the Hong Kong Government together with the Hong Kong City University (HK CityU) hosted a low-cost sensor workshop to establish a joint platform for the work and also to bring any other colleagues working on this. Professor Lidia Morawska from the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) gave a plenary presentation at the workshop titled, The use of advance portable Air Quality sensors, and had meetings with Dr. Peter Louie (Hong Kong EPD), Professors Jimmy Fung and Alexis Lau (Hong Kong University of Science and Technology), as well as Professor Zhi Ning and Dr. Dane Westerdahl (HK CiyU). Discussions in the meeting were related to the work being carried out by QUT, as well Professor Ning’s work on sensors and system development, and various applications in urban air quality settings, such as the International Marathon sensor network and bus platform based mobile air sensor network in Hong Kong.
These discussions and joint work lead to a new initiative: progress of low-cost sensor technologies and their applications across China and globally will be presented at a high level workshop organised in association with the 5th International Symposium on Regional Air Quality Management in Rapidly Developing Economic Regions (RAQM) to be held in Guangzhou, China from the 16-19th November 2017. The 5th RAQM is being organised by the Institute for Environmental and Climate Research, Jinan University. More information about the program and how to register, will soon be available on the conference website. We will keep members of the ACC-AQSM updated on this important event.

Congratulations to the members of the ACC-AQSM on a successful Hong Kong Research Grants Council grant! Professor Tao Wang of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (HK PolyU) was awarded more than HK $33 million for his collaborative five-year project entitled “Photochemical Air Pollution in Highly Urbanized Subtropical Regions: from Micro Environments to Urban-Terrestrial-Oceanic Interactions”. Co-principal investigators include:
Professor Guy Brasseur of the Max Planck Institute (also a distinguished chair professor at HKPU), Professor Hai Guo of HK PolyU, Dr Kin-fai Ho from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Professor Alexis Lau from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Professor Shuncheng Lee of HK PolyU, Dr Chun-ho Liu from the University of Hong Kong, Dr Peter Louie from the Environment Protection Department (EPD) of the Hong Kong Government, Professor Xinming Wang of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Dr Zhe Wang of HK PolyU. Co-investigators are Dr Kenneth Leung of HK’s EPD and Dr Yingjun Liu of the University of California at Berkeley. Congratulations to the team!

The 2017 Annual Conference of Atmospheric Environment, together with the Chinese Society for Atmospheric Environment, Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences, and the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences are pleased to present a two-day conference to be held on the 8-9th December 2017, in Beijing, and among the presenters will include members of the ACC-AQSM. The Conference aims at bringing together scientists from different fields, industry and representatives of local governments, to share research and discuss how to improve urban air quality and its specificities in East Asia.
Participants are invited to submit their abstracts as an oral or poster presentation, and submissions must be sent to the workshop’s local organizing committee by email (desox@163.com) by the 31st October 2017. For more information on the conference and for registration.

Just a reminder that the Application of Low Cost Sensors and Their Networks for Urban Air Quality Monitoring training course is taking place on the 19th October 2017, at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, as part of the Clean Air Society of Australia and New Zealand (CASANZ) conference. Several members of the Centre are already involved in this. The conference program and registration is available on the CASANZ Website.

On 30th July 2017, a delegation from Guangzhou arrived at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia for a workshop on air quality. The delegation consisted of: Associate Dean and Professor Xuemei WANG , Professor Jun ZHAO, and Dr. Shengzhen ZHOU, from the School of Atmospheric Sciences, Sun Yat-sen University; Professor Junyu ZHENG, from the School of Environment and Energy, South China University of Technology; and Professor Xinming WANG and Associate Professor Yanli ZHANG, from the Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
The visit was supported by a QUT Guangdong Science and Technology Commission (GDSTC) Collaborative Research Grant. A two day workshop on air quality issues in Guangzhou was followed by a visit to the Australian Research Vessel RV Investigator. The discussion was centred on the current GDSTC project and the coming measurement campaign in China.

The 3rd Annual Conference of the ACC-AQSM will be held in Beijing from the 4 – 5th November 2017, and will be hosted by the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences (CRAES). We are proposing a new format for the conference, namely focused on working together, and on outcomes. Let’s work together on a Special Issue of the journal of Science! We were successful in generating an impressive SI for STOTEN, so why not to attempt now to set the bar even higher? Of course, there is no guarantee that Science will publish all the papers, which we would prepare (none of us is an Editor of Science), but this would give us a big goal! You can find the venue address and more information on the Annual Conference on the Events Page, and further details and the program will be circulated soon!

The 600th Session of the Xiangshan Science Conference took place in Beijing and was titled: Bioaerosols and Human Health, National Bio-security as well as Air Pollution. A number of ACC-AQSM Centre members attended and participated in it! You can spot them in the conference group photo below, including the Conference Executive Co-Chair Professor Maosheng Yao from the Peking University.
The Xiangshan Conferences are known to be of the highest level academic conferences in China, and the specific aspects of the 600th Session included:
- the sources, emissions, spreading and pathogenic mechanism of bioaerosols, and their influential factors and zoonoses;
- theoretical system underlying new methods for bioaerosol capture, biological sensing, decontamination and protection; and
- bioaerosols and the formation mechanism of atmospheric pollution and haze, toxicity monitoring and prediction of particulate matter and human health effects.

The Clean Air Society of Australia and New Zealand (CASANZ), together with Queensland University of Technology are pleased to present a special training event: Application of Low Cost Sensors and Their Networks for Urban Air Quality Monitoring. The training course will be held on 19 October 2017, directly following the 23rd International Clean Air Conference in Brisbane, Australia, and among the presenters will include members of the ACC-AQSM. This exciting course pairs the principles of low cost sensor monitoring with practical sessions on building and operating low cost sensor networks for air quality applications. The 23rd International Clean Air Conference runs from the 15th to 18th October 2017 with the theme, “The Critical Atmosphere”. The conference program includes Professor Jiming Hao, Tsinghua University, China, as one of the plenary presenters. The conference program and registration is available on the CASANZ website. The conference is the premier event for air quality professionals including a comprehensive paper program, large exhibition gallery, social events, networking sessions and pre-conference workshops. Earlier this month, Professor Hai Guo from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University visited the Queensland University of Technology to continue discussions on the Centre’s awarded joint Asian Universities Cluster (AUC) Center of Excellence in Civil Engineering project titled, Impacts of Megacities on Regional Atmospheric Environment – A comparative study of emission, transformation and effects of urban pollution from Australia, Singapore, Shanghai, and Hong Kong. There are further meetings planned in May, together with members from Tongji University and National University of Singapore, to start planning the arrangements of the concurrent 2018 field sampling campaign in four cities in four different countries/regions.
The visit also led to discussions on a new potential collaborative Centre project on using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)’s to monitor particle number (PN). Hai’s group is developing chemical sensors for conducting measurements of CO, SO2, CO2, PM2.5, O3 and PN plus temperature, relative humidity, which will be used for the measurement of vertical profiles of air pollutants in street canyon in Hong Kong.

A joint PhD agreement has been signed between the Fudan University and the Queensland University of Technology! The agreement was finalised following QUT’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Coaldrake, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Scott Sheppard, Professor Ian Mackinnon and Ms Jacqueline Yuan’s visit to Shanghai in December last year.

Applications for the 2017 Australia-APEC Women in Research Fellowship round is now open for high-achieving post-doctorate and early career female researchers from China to pursue research opportunities in partnership with Australian education and research institutions! This Fellowship is designed to assist with the particular challenges female researchers face in undertaking cross-border research activities such as lack of flexibility and extra financial support for child care. An exciting new measurement campaign! The Shanghai Cooking Emissions Campaign was carried out at the Tongji University from December 2016 to January 2017, led by Professor Zoran Ristovski and Dr. Svetlana Stevanovic from the Queensland University of Technology, Associate Professor Lina Wang from the East China University of Science and Technology, Professor Jun Gao from the Tongji University, Professor Lin Wang from Fudan University, and Dr. Li Li and Dr. Hongli Wang from the Shanghai Academy of Environment Sciences. This joint project was funded by a National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) Grant, with Svetlana and Lina as the Chief Investigators. The project focuses on the measurement of the physical and chemical properties of cooking aerosols, as well as their ROS profiles and cell toxicity. Read more
