The East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST) was officially founded in 1952 from a merge of the chemical or chemistry departments from Jiaotong University, Université d’Aurora, Utopia University, Soochow University and Jiangnan University, and became the first chemical industry oriented university in China named as the ECUST.

In 1973, the “three wastes” treatment Laboratory was established and in 1981, the Department of Environmental Engineering was established at the ECUST. Environmental engineering is a school professional brand and national specialty, and have passed the engineering education accreditation organized by the Ministry of Education in 2014. In 2008, China Ministry of Environmental set up a key laboratory in ECUST on “Environmental risk assessment and control of Chemical materials in chemical processes”.

Since 1988, our group have begun to study source profile and formation mechanisms of PM2.5 and ozone. Now we still focus on source, formation processes, health effects and control of haze and ozone such as measurement of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), organic species in particle-phase and interaction between particle and ozone. ECUST and Shanghai Environmental Protection Department (SEPD) have set up a joint-research stereoscopic observation base in ECUST New Campus utilising by tethered balloon, the biggest weight-loaded balloon used for environmental monitoring. mercury), POPS and other elements in ambient airborne particles and emitted from combustion sources, as well as air transportation models and atmospheric chemistry models. Recently we began our studies on personal exposure and health effects of particles and ozone. In addition, our group is also one of important air pollution control policies study groups in Shanghai, and we have provided recommendations for national air pollutants emission standard for four kinds of industries and two local emission standards. As the Key Laboratory of China MEP, we have also investigated the air pollution near chemical industry park and attempt to to trace the pollution sources through combining source to receptor and receptor to source.

学(苏州)、江南大学(无锡)等校化工系合并组建而成的新中国第一所以化工特色闻名的高等学府。1993年经国家教委批准,更名为华东理工大学,1996年进入国家“211工程”重点建设行列,1997年上海市参与共建共管,2000年经教育部批准建立研究生院,2008年获准建设“985优势学科创新平台”,是国家首批实施自主招生改革的22所高校之一。
